What shapes our sense of safety, belonging, and identity in the spaces we move through?

Our biases are shaped by the voices we’ve heard—family, media, culture, and the environments we occupy. What if we could redesign those influences?

This immersive 2-hour workshop invites creatives, curious residents, and community voices to reimagine how we design for safety, belonging, and emotional connection. Through a mix of personal storytelling, speculative thinking, and generative design, participants will create visual outputs that challenge the unconscious rules embedded in the spaces around us.

  • Design Through Emotion: Interact with a live visual system built in TouchDesigner, where your emotional inputs shape abstract visuals in real time. You’ll receive your own digital output after the session.

  • Co-Design Through Empathy: Step into another person’s perspective and collaborate to rethink how space can serve diverse needs.

  • Speculative Mapping: Use layered drawing, mapping, or collage to redesign a blank or familiar space—moving beyond practicality to express deep emotional and social desires.

Outcomes from the session will contribute to a larger community-led installation and will feed into a follow-up public event—co-hosted with a local nonprofit—focused on turning insights into actionable change. Details coming soon.

Come ready to sketch, collage, map, and most importantly: question. No prior design experience needed—just your imagination.

Workshop Goals:

  • To creatively investigate how bias is reinforced through design

  • To make invisible “rules” of space visible through collaborative activities

  • To use speculative design as a tool for freedom and inclusion

  • To co-create new, bias-free spaces of belonging—visually and conceptually

  • To be part of a larger community installation!
